The Yale Institute of Sacred Music (ISM) supports scholars and doctoral researchers studying the aural, material, visual, ritual, and textual cultures of religions through Yale’s non-circulating collections. The program funds interdisciplinary scholarly or creative projects related to sacred music, worship, and the arts, drawing on holdings spanning virtually every age and region of the world.
Fellows spend one to three months in residence, working with collections such as the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Divinity Library special collections, Yale Center for British Art, Yale Peabody Museum, and Yale University Art Gallery. The ISM connects fellows with relevant curators and collections and encourages participation in university life. Selection emphasizes a project’s significance to its field, alignment with the Institute’s mission, and the collections’ capacity to support the work.
