Summary: Build rainfall classification models using Ghanaian farmers’ indigenous ecological indicators to improve hyper-local weather forecasts.

Key Information: Open only to African citizens; only participants without a previous Zindi gold medal are prize-eligible.

    Description

Hosted on Zindi, this beginner-focused machine-learning competition asks participants to predict rainfall in Ghana’s Pra River Basin using indigenous weather knowledge. The task is to build classification models predicting heavy, moderate, or small rainfall over the next 12 to 24 hours, based solely on ecological indicators submitted by trained farmers. These include observations of clouds, sun, wind, moon, plants, and animal behavior.

The Smart Indigenous Weather App pairs farmers’ forecasts and their underlying indicators with rainfall measured by rain gauges. The challenge aims to digitize and evaluate traditional forecasting methods, support accurate local predictions where conventional models often fail, and connect scientific and cultural knowledge systems. Its broader goals are to strengthen rural communities’ agency, agricultural planning, and resilience while enriching meteorological understanding.
