GenAI for Good Challenge: Cities Edition (Phase 1 Technical Assessment) supports teams developing open-source AI question-answering tools to address transit, energy, and green infrastructure challenges in cities.
Funder: Zindi
Due Dates: November 19, 2026 (Live Q&A) | November 30, 2026 (Dataset proposals) | December 12, 2026 (Technical submission and selection) | December 13, 2026 (Full application)
Funding Amounts: No financial award for Phase 1; later stages offer $10,000 for prototypes plus up to $30,000 for selected pilots
Summary: A technical assessment leading toward responsible, open-source generative AI tools for municipal challenges in Pristina, Rivne, and Skopje.
Key Information: Informal teams of 2–4 individuals must submit both a Zindi technical assessment and an IEEE narrative application.
The GenAI for Good Challenge: Cities Edition is led by IEEE Humanitarian Technologies with UNDP and hosted on Zindi for its Phase 1 technical assessment. It connects teams with city stakeholders and technical expertise to develop responsible, open-source generative AI for municipal deployment across Europe and Central Asia. The three use cases address transit route reviews in Pristina, energy efficiency investment in Rivne, and green infrastructure records in Skopje.
The assessment asks teams to build a question-answering system using reports, spreadsheets, technical guidance, and spatial datasets. Answers must be accurate and supported by references. Tasks include calculations, spatial analysis, comparing records, interpreting exceptions, and recognising insufficient information. This phase evaluates technical capability rather than awarding funding, with successful teams progressing toward proposal development, prototypes, and city pilots.
