    Description

This global forecasting competition is sponsored by Green Rising Barbados in partnership with Future Barbados and powered by Zindi. Participants predict daily methane concentrations five days ahead at 59 monitoring stations across six continents. The task uses station measurements from ICOS, AGAGE, SNO, NOAA and JMA alongside NOAA weather forecasts. Unlike a conventional machine-learning challenge, predictions are scored against measurements that have not yet happened.

The challenge focuses on anticipating when and where methane concentrations rise. Methane traps around 80 times more heat than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period but breaks down within a decade, making action on methane one of the fastest levers for slowing warming. The competition connects global monitoring data and weather forecasts with that need for advance warning.
