Description
The Batten Disease Global Research Initiative (BDGRI) invests in research addressing unmet needs across all forms of Batten disease, also known as Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinoses (NCLs). Founded in 2024, the initiative brings together BDSRA Foundation USA, BDSRA Canada, BDSRA Australia, and the Batten Disease Family Association UK. Its goals are to accelerate therapeutic development, improve diagnosis and standards of care, and enhance outcomes for affected individuals.
Research priorities include gene-targeted therapies, reliable biomarkers, early diagnosis and newborn screening, halting or reversing progression, cognition and behavior, maintaining function, and effects outside the central nervous system. Other priorities include rapid bench-to-bedside translation, shared targets with similar lysosomal disorders, complementary health approaches, measuring and treating pain and distress, and optimal clinical trial designs. Projects may address these priorities but are not limited to them.
