The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA), a nonprofit contractor to the Beef Checkoff, provides grants-in-aid to qualified scientists conducting beef-related research. Its Scientific Affairs Department oversees programs in Product Quality, Human Nutrition, Pre-Harvest Beef Safety, and Beef Sustainability. Each program issues its own request for proposals identifying research priorities, within a broader goal of enhancing the profit potential of beef and beef products.
The programs support research guided by five-year Research Roadmaps. Product Quality opportunities have included applied and basic science, exploratory pilot projects, proof-of-concept studies, literature reviews, gap analyses, and existing-data analyses. NCBA uses independent external peer review and awards funding on scientific merit, never contingent on anticipated outcomes. Investigators retain control of study design, data, and analysis, along with the freedom and responsibility to publish their findings.
