The program funds feature films at the development, production, and post-production stages, while support for short and medium-length films focuses on production and post-production. Its focus is the practical and creative work of developing and completing films, connecting support for individual projects with AFAC’s broader commitment to arts and culture. Supported work can include research and development, materials, space and equipment rentals, and artistic and technical collaboration. Project-related implementation or research travel may also be covered. These grants help meet the costs of film work at distinct stages, from developing a feature-length project to producing a film or carrying out post-production. --- ## Description The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC) Cinema program supports feature, short, and medium-length fiction films in the Arab region. Feature-length projects can receive support for development, production, or post-production, while short and medium-length films receive production or post-production support. The program welcomes Arab directors and producers living in the Arab region or diaspora, and non-Arab producers working with Arab directors. Cinema forms part of AFAC’s work to support arts and culture and sustain the Arab cultural scene. Grants support the practical and creative work involved in developing and completing films, including research, materials, equipment or space rentals, and artistic and technical collaboration. Creators retain the material and moral rights to their supported projects. --- ## Due Dates - June 2027: Application deadline (anticipated). Cinema is included in AFAC’s second annual open call, alongside Music, Documentary Photography, and Training & Regional Events. *All dates are projected based on the annual cycle; check the program page for updates.* --- ## Funding Amount Maximum awards depend on film length and project stage: - **Feature development:** Up to USD 10,000. - **Feature production:** Up to USD 50,000. - **Feature post-production:** Up to USD 25,000. - **Short and medium-length production:** Up to USD 20,000. - **Short and medium-length post-production:** Up to USD 10,000. Projects must be completed within two years of signing the grant agreement. Extensions require written approval. Selected applicants may receive less than requested and must then submit an updated budget. Grants may cover research and development, materials, space or equipment rentals, and artistic and technical fees. Director and producer fees may not exceed 30% of the total grant. Project-related implementation or research travel may be covered, but AFAC does not offer mobility grants. Completed projects are not supported retroactively. For projects already underway, only expenses after the agreement’s signature are covered. --- ## Eligibility Eligible applicants must: - Be Arab directors or producers, or non-Arab producers working with an Arab director. - Live in the Arab region or diaspora (no country-of-residence restriction). - Submit a fiction film at an eligible stage. - For short films, have a director who has never made a feature film. - Have no current open AFAC grant, except for the producer exception below. - Observe the two-year exclusion following grants received in two consecutive years. Applications are accepted regardless of age, years of experience, ethnicity, gender, or religion. Producers are highly recommended for production and post-production projects. Additional requirements: - Directors with open grants are ineligible, including grants contracted in a producer’s name. - Producers may apply with one open grant, but not with two open grants. - Films already receiving two AFAC grants cannot apply for post-production. - AFAC trustees, staff, their business partners/families, and current-year readers/jurors are ineligible. Each individual or institution may submit one application per open call. Film producers may submit up to two projects per category per cycle, provided they have different directors. Funding categories: - **Development:** Feature-length fiction films. - **Production:** Feature, short, and medium-length fiction films. - **Post-production:** Feature, short, and medium-length fiction films. --- ## Application Process - **Submission:** Apply through the [online form](https://arabculturefund.formstack.com/forms/afac_call_2), not by mail or email. - **Preparation:** Review the stage-specific previews and [supporting-material checklist](https://www.arabculturefund.org/data/resources/121.pdf) before applying. - **Required documents:** Submit project materials, budgets, implementation plan, and applicant information described below. - **Evaluation:** Eligibility screening is followed by independent reader review and independent jury selection. - **Confirmation:** Successful submission generates a confirmation email. - **Notification:** Applicants receive an email before selected projects are announced online and on social media. Incomplete applications are disqualified; AFAC does not contact applicants about missing materials. Submit 24 hours before the deadline for technical assistance, which is unavailable on deadline day. Submitted applications cannot be edited. ### Supporting materials All applications require: - A visual, audio, or written sample of the proposed work. - Up to three previous-work samples, unless this is the applicant’s first work. - A detailed total project budget. - A breakdown of the amount requested from AFAC. - A completed implementation plan using the provided template. Stage-specific materials include: - **Development:** Full script and treatment. - **Production:** Final full script and treatment. - **Post-production:** Script, treatment, and rough cut. - English checklist: 15 minutes for medium-length films and 40 minutes for features. - Arabic checklist: at least 10 minutes for medium-length films and 25 minutes for features. - Post-production preview: at least 15 minutes for short/medium films and 40 minutes for features. - A trailer may accompany the rough cut. - **Animation:** A mood board for partly or fully animated projects. Confirm rough-cut length with AFAC before submitting, as the checklist and application preview give different requirements. The post-production preview also requests a synopsis, project description, director’s statement, project challenges, and collaborator details. Applicant materials include identification/passport, profile photograph, biography, CV, contact details, two references, and previous-grant information. Equivalent personal materials are requested for co-directors, with producer identification and contact information where applicable. The preview allows up to three co-directors, excluding the applicant. Upload files up to 10 MB directly; provide larger files through links. WeTransfer links are not accepted. Supply passwords where needed and keep links accessible through evaluation and announcement. --- ## Additional Information ### Payments and reporting Payments are tied to the grant agreement and approved reports: - **Development:** 70% on signing, 30% after approved final reports and outputs. - **Production:** 25% on signing, 60% after approved interim reports, 15% after approved final reports. - The second payment requires spending at least 80% of the first transfer. - **Post-production:** 50% on signing, 50% after approved final reports and outputs. Grantees submit narrative and financial reports covering progress and expenditure. ### Rights and acknowledgment AFAC does not own material or moral rights arising from supported projects. Grantees must acknowledge AFAC’s support in communications, publications, deliverables, press releases, interviews, and outreach, using its logo and full name under the grant-agreement guidelines. Grantees must provide final-product copies and/or invitations to final-output events, plus related media.
