Recreation initiatives that provide access to natural resources may also be considered. The cycle advances the foundation’s mission to enhance residents’ quality of life now and for generations to come. Priorities include alignment with local or regional community plans, well-planned activities that address an identified need, and lasting community impact. The foundation also considers an organization’s capacity and relevance, alongside the potential to strengthen the organization or its community. Projects may demonstrate collaboration, respond to emerging needs, test new approaches to existing needs, help people help themselves, prevent problems, or avoid duplicating services. The Environment & Land Use Advisory Committee recommends funding to the foundation’s Board of Trustees, and donor advisors may provide additional support.75:T1744,

--- ## Description The Environment & Land Use Cycle is administered by the Charlevoix County Community Foundation (C3F) to support environmental education, protection, restoration, and sustainability in Charlevoix County and the Lake Charlevoix Watershed. It also supports the organizations carrying out this work. Recreation initiatives that provide access to natural resources may be considered. The cycle advances C3F’s mission to enhance quality of life for county residents now and for generations to come. Successful requests may demonstrate collaboration, respond to new needs, test new approaches to existing needs, encourage people to help themselves, prevent problems, or avoid duplicating services. Donor advisors may also choose to support applications through their funds at the foundation. --- ## Due Dates - March 2027: Application deadline (anticipated). *All dates are projected based on the annual cycle; check the program page for updates.* --- ## Funding Amount Requests of all sizes are encouraged. C3F does not limit the size or scope of a request; applicants should request what their project or program needs. The grant period is one year. All applications require a cash contribution toward the project or program budget. The expected contribution depends on the project’s topic and scope. Donor-advised funds may provide additional support through the cycle. --- ## Eligibility Eligible applicants must: - Be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, unit of government, or educational institution (preschool through college). - Serve Charlevoix County residents. - Not discriminate in staff hiring or service provision. - Be current with follow-ups for all previous C3F grant awards. - Be in good standing with the IRS. - Request funding for a future need benefiting Charlevoix County residents. Additional requirements: - Faith-based proposals must address community needs and demonstrate clear public benefit. - Faith-based services must be accessible regardless of religious beliefs or lifestyle choices. - Faith-based projects must not proselytize or require participation, prayer, or volunteering in exchange for services. - The organization’s governing board is responsible for appropriate fund use and project implementation. C3F generally does not fund annual fundraising campaigns, political campaigns, deficit spending, sectarian projects, services normally supported by tax dollars, loan payments, or grants to individuals. --- ## Application Process - **Initial conversation:** [Schedule a call with Ashley Cousens](http://calendly.com/acousens/grant-intake-call) to discuss eligibility and project fit. - **Access code:** C3F provides an application code if the request fits the cycle. - **Submission:** Complete the online application through the [Grant Portal](https://www.grantinterface.com/Home/Logon?urlkey=c3f). - **Review:** The Environment & Land Use Advisory Committee recommends funding to C3F’s Board of Trustees. - **Donor consideration:** C3F shares applications with donor advisors to encourage additional grant support. - **Notification:** Applicants receive a phone call and award letter following Board approval. --- ## Additional Information ### Evaluation criteria Requests scoring best against the following criteria receive priority: - Alignment with environmental education, protection, restoration, and sustainability in the county or watershed. - Inclusion in a city, township, county, or regional community plan. - The organization’s community impact and relevance. - Organizational capacity, including leadership, staffing, planning, and solvency. - Potential to strengthen the organization or the community it serves. - Proposal completeness and well-planned activities addressing an identified need. - Duration of community impact. Applicants should clearly identify the need and explain how the proposed activities address it. Relevant community plans may include master, recreation, strategic, or watershed management plans. ### After an award Grant checks are usually mailed within two weeks of the funding decision. Recipients must complete an online follow-up summary when the work is finished and funds are spent, or within 12 months of the award, whichever comes first. An optional site visit does not replace the online follow-up. If work is delayed or cannot be completed within the grant period, the organization’s representative should call C3F. --- ## External Links - [Environment & Land Use Cycle guidelines](https://www.c3f.org/userfiles/filemanager/grz0kjpu0wojp5dldhzz) - [Apply for a Grant: cycle information and application guide](https://www.c3f.org/nonprofits/apply-for-a-grant.html) - [Grant Portal](https://www.grantinterface.com/Home/Logon?urlkey=c3f) - [Schedule an intake call with Ashley Cousens](http://calendly.com/acousens/grant-intake-call) - [Grant follow-up information](https://www.c3f.org/nonprofits/grant-follow-up.html) --- ## Contact Information | Contact | Email | Phone | Webpage | |---|---|---|---| | Ashley Cousens, Community Grantmaking | acousens@c3f.org | | [Schedule a call](http://calendly.com/acousens/grant-intake-call) | | Charlevoix County Community Foundation | info@c3f.org | (231) 536-2440 | [Contact staff](https://www.c3f.org/about-us/contact-our-staff.html) |76:T819,## Grant Eligibility Requirements ### Organization Type - Applicants must be one of: a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization, a unit of government (any level), or an educational institution (preschool through college). - Only organizations may apply — grants to individuals are not made, so individual researchers cannot apply directly for their own personal support. ### Geographic/Institutional - The applicant organization must serve Charlevoix County, Michigan residents (this is a service-area requirement; the grant does not state that the organization itself must be located in the county). - The proposed project must benefit Charlevoix County residents. ### Prior Funding / Proposal Limits - The organization must be current on follow-up reports for all previous Charlevoix County Community Foundation (C3F) grant awards. ### Other Eligibility Requirements - The organization must be in good standing with the IRS. - The organization must not discriminate in staff hiring or in the provision of services. - The request must be for a future need; the foundation does not fund deficit spending or loan payments, and generally does not fund annual fundraising campaigns, political campaigns, sectarian projects, or services normally supported by tax dollars. - Faith-based applicants face additional conditions: proposals must address community needs with clearly demonstrated public benefit, services must be fully accessible to all people regardless of religious beliefs or lifestyle choices, and the organization may not proselytize or require participation in services, prayer, or volunteering in exchange for services. - An applicant cash contribution toward the project/program budget is required (a cost-share/matching requirement); the expected amount varies with the topic and scope of the project. - Access to the application is gated: prospective applicants must first discuss eligibility and project fit with C3F staff (Ashley Cousens) and will receive an online application access code only if the request is judged a good fit with the cycle.77:T9d8,Funder: Charlevoix County Community Foundation Due Dates (Anticipated): March 2027 (Application deadline) Funding Amounts: Requests of all sizes; one-year grant period; applicant cash contribution required Summary: Supports environmental education, protection, restoration, and sustainability in Charlevoix County and the Lake Charlevoix Watershed.
