Research Proposals - Fats and Proteins Research Foundation supports scientists studying rendering processes and animal products to improve safety, quality, nutritional use, and value for the rendering industry.
Funder: Fats and Proteins Research Foundation
Due Dates: March 15, 2027 (Spring: pre-proposals and full proposals) | September 15, 2027 (Fall: pre-proposals and full proposals)
Funding Amounts: Recent at-large grants average approximately $45,000 each; no recommended grant range or limit
Summary: Supports research to improve rendering processes, enhance current uses of rendered animal products, and develop new applications.
Key Information: Funding is limited to scientists at universities or research organizations complying with specified animal-care requirements or equivalents.
The Fats and Proteins Research Foundation (FPRF) funds research that benefits the rendering industry by improving processes, product safety and quality, and the utilization of rendered animal products. Its focus areas include livestock nutrition, including aquaculture, pet food nutrition, feed safety, sustainability, and novel technologies. Research objectives may address significant industry problems, chemical or biological modifications that increase product value, or nutritional studies that improve use in animal diets.
The request for proposals emphasizes gaps in aquaculture, swine, and poultry nutrition relevant to diet formulators. FPRF also supports Clemson University’s Animal Co-Products Research and Education Center (ACREC), particularly research on cooker validation, thermal destruction of feed and food safety hazards, and plant operations. At-large proposals outside these priorities, including biosecurity and new uses, are considered but require a compelling case.
