September 2027 (application deadline)

$5,000 per award

Awards recognize exceptional past work by Ohio artists and provide resources for their artistic development.

Applicants must have lived in Ohio for one year before the deadline and remain residents throughout the grant period.

--- ## Description The Ohio Arts Council’s Individual Excellence Awards recognize outstanding achievement in an artist’s past body of work rather than fund a proposed project. The program spans choreography, music composition, interdisciplinary and performance art, media arts, crafts, design, photography, visual arts, and literature, including criticism. Awards affirm creativity, technical skill, and sustained quality. Artists may use the funds to experiment, develop skills, and advance their careers through expenses supporting their artmaking, such as studio rent, supplies, equipment, or childcare. Applications are judged on the submitted work and the context the artist provides for it. --- ## Due Dates - September 2027 — application deadline (anticipated). *All dates are projected based on the annual cycle; check the program page for updates.* --- ## Funding Amount Individual Excellence Awards are $5,000. In an awarded two-artist collaboration, each artist receives half. Funds cannot be used to enroll in or continue a degree-granting program. The [funding restrictions for individuals](https://oac.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/art/grants/01-guidelines/appendix-b) cover other limits on uses of Ohio Arts Council funds. --- ## Eligibility Eligible applicants must: - Be creative artists age 18 or older. - Have lived in Ohio for one year before the application deadline. - Remain Ohio residents throughout the grant period. - Submit a body of past artistic work, not work created primarily using AI. - Be current on prior Ohio Arts Council reports and other requested documentation. Additional requirements: - High school, undergraduate, and graduate students cannot apply; applicants cannot be students during the grant cycle. - Artists may submit one application per calendar year, except for a separate Criticism submission. - Previous recipients must skip the next deadline and cannot resubmit previously funded work. - Collaborations are limited to two Ohio-resident artists who each retain creative ownership of the work. Criticism applicants may submit a second, separate body of work in another discipline, but may receive only one award per year. Award recipients cannot apply for an Artist Opportunities or Artist with Disabilities Access Program award for five years. Public programming, if any, must be offered in facilities meeting federal and state accessibility requirements. --- ## Application Process - **Submission:** Apply through [ARTIE](https://ohioartscouncil.smartsimple.com/s_Login.jsp) as an individual. - **Required materials:** A completed application, narrative and philosophy statements, and discipline-specific work samples. - **Anonymous review:** Remove names and biographical information from submitted work and statements. - **Collaborations:** One artist applies and names the second artist in the application. - **Evaluation:** An expert panel scores the work and materials; the Ohio Arts Council Board makes final funding decisions. - **Guidance:** See the [individual application guide](https://oac.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/art/grants/01-guidelines/appendix-g) and [program page](https://oac.ohio.gov/grants/10-grant-opportunities/05-individual-excellence-awards) for submission requirements. --- ## Additional Information Panelists consider whether the work demonstrates exceptional achievement, technical proficiency, consistent quality, inventive use of its medium, and strength relative to other work in the field. They also assess the artist narrative’s context and the relevance and quality of supporting materials. Work-sample types, quantities, and recency requirements differ by discipline. Recipients accept a grant agreement in ARTIE and submit a final report. The program page gives grant-agreement and reporting deadlines for each published cycle. --- ## External Links - [Individual Excellence Awards program page](https://oac.ohio.gov/grants/10-grant-opportunities/05-individual-excellence-awards) - [ARTIE application system](https://ohioartscouncil.smartsimple.com/s_Login.jsp) - [Individual application process guide](https://oac.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/art/grants/01-guidelines/appendix-g) - [Funding restrictions for individuals](https://oac.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/art/grants/01-guidelines/appendix-b) - [Ohio Arts Council staff directory](https://oac.ohio.gov/about/staff-directory) --- ## Contact Information | Contact | Email | Phone | Webpage | |---|---|---|---| | Ohio Arts Council | communications@oac.ohio.gov | (614) 466-2613 | [Help Center](https://oac.ohio.gov/help-center) |75:Ta88,## Grant Eligibility Requirements ### Organization Type - Applications must be submitted by individual artists; individual artists may not apply through an organizational fiscal agent's sponsorship. - An individual artist grant cannot directly benefit any organization that is currently receiving OAC funding (individuals may still be employed by or serve on the boards of such organizations). ### Career Stage - High school students and students pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees may not apply. - Applicants must not be students at the time of application or at any point during the grant cycle. (Work created while previously a student may be submitted, provided the applicant is not a student at application or during the cycle.) ### Geographic/Institutional - Applicants must have lived in Ohio for at least one year prior to the application deadline. - Applicants must remain Ohio residents throughout the grant period. - For collaborative applications, both artists must be Ohio residents. ### Demographic - Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. ### Prior Funding / Proposal Limits - Artists may submit only one application per calendar year. (Criticism applicants in the literature year may submit one criticism application and one application in another discipline, using two separate bodies of work — but may receive only one award per year even if recommended in both.) - Recipients of an Individual Excellence Award must skip the next deadline before reapplying (e.g., a prior-cycle recipient cannot apply at the immediately following deadline, even in a different discipline). - Previously funded work may not be resubmitted at future deadlines; resubmission of funded work results in disqualification. - Recipients of an Individual Excellence Award are ineligible to apply for an Artist Opportunities or Artist with Disabilities Access Program award for five years. - Applicants must be in "good standing" with the OAC — final reports for prior fiscal years' funding must be completed and submitted on time, and no other requested information/documentation may be outstanding. ### Other Eligibility Requirements - Applicants must submit a body of past artistic work; work created primarily using artificial intelligence (AI) is not accepted. - Collaborations are limited to two artists, each of whom must retain creative ownership of the work. (One artist applies and names the second.) - Multiple individual applicants cannot apply for funding for the same project. - To be eligible for OAC funding, any programming that is open to the public must be offered in facilities that meet or exceed federal and state accessibility (ADA/Section 504) requirements.76:T98a,Funder: Ohio Arts Council Due Dates (Anticipated): September 2027 (application deadline) Funding Amounts: $5,000 per award Summary: Awards recognize exceptional past work by Ohio artists and provide resources for their artistic development.
