The Scratch Cooking in Schools Pilot is an initiative of the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), listed among its Farm to Family program’s 2027 funding opportunities. It aims to expand scratch cooking and local purchasing in Michigan School Nutrition Programs, bringing together the preparation of school meals from scratch and the use of Michigan-grown or Michigan-produced foods on school menus.
The pilot supports the practical resources needed for this work: equipment, infrastructure, supplies, training, and administrative costs. It is intended for Local Education Agencies that already procure and serve Michigan foods and seek to expand scratch cooking and local purchasing within their school nutrition programs.
