Its focus is on visual storytelling that conveys a progression of mood and emotion, with attention to how design and composition contribute to the narrative. A rotating panel of judges sets a fresh theme and assignment each year and evaluates the artwork’s narrative qualities alongside the effectiveness of its visual design. The 2026 theme marks the 50th anniversary of Apple Computer, Inc., but places ingenuity rather than technology at the heart of the story. The assignment centers on a problem solved through human ingenuity, or that of a feline, canine, or another life-form. Through this focus, the award recognizes storytelling in which images alone communicate the problem and its resolution. The winning illustrations are displayed at the New York Portfolio Showcase, held in conjunction with the SCBWI New York Winter Conference.75:T130c,
