Kansas Department of Transportation

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) is the state agency responsible for planning, developing, operating and maintaining Kansas's multimodal transportation system, including highways, bridges, aviation, rail, public transit and active transportation. Headquartered in the Eisenhower State Office Building in Topeka, KDOT delivers the state's long-range transportation investment program and partners with cities, counties, tribes, nonprofit organizations, railroads and other local entities on projects across Kansas. In addition to building and maintaining state infrastructure, KDOT administers a broad portfolio of funding and grant programs open to local partners. These include flexible programs such as the Cost Share Program and Economic Development Program, bridge and safety programs (Off-System Bridge, Kansas Local Bridge Improvement, and the Highway Safety Improvement Program), multimodal and transit programs (the FTA Section 5310/5311/5339 formula and specialized-transportation grants, Transportation Alternatives, and Kansas Safe Routes to School), and innovation and connectivity programs (the Innovative Technology Program, Kansas Carbon Reduction Program, NEVI electric-vehicle infrastructure, and Broadband Acceleration Grant Program). KDOT publishes these opportunities through its Local Opportunity Programs and broader Programs pages, where communities and partners can find program descriptions, eligibility, and application guidance. Many programs run on recurring cycles (for example, Cost Share and Transportation Alternatives issue periodic calls for projects), making KDOT a significant source of state and federal-pass-through transportation funding for Kansas localities.
