Research Council of Finland

The Research Council of Finland (Suomen Akatemia; formerly the Academy of Finland until its renaming in 2025) is Finland's main government agency for funding scientific research. Operating under the Ministry of Education and Culture, it finances high-quality, responsible and high-impact research, supports researcher training and research careers, and develops the conditions for science and research-based knowledge in Finland. The Council awards funding primarily through competitive calls for applications, including its major Academy Project and Academy Research Fellow funding, research programmes, centres of excellence, and a wide range of international and partnership calls such as joint Nordic, European and global initiatives. It runs two major application rounds each year, in spring and winter, alongside other calls throughout the year. Funding is applied for either by a project's principal investigator or by the host research organisation. Grants are awarded through open competition. The Council publishes its currently open and forthcoming calls on its calls-for-applications pages, while closed calls are archived separately.
