London Mathematical Society

The London Mathematical Society (LMS) is the United Kingdom's learned society for mathematics, founded in 1865 and incorporated by Royal Charter. Based at De Morgan House in Russell Square, London, it is a registered charity (252660) whose central purpose is to promote and extend mathematical knowledge. The Society publishes a large journal portfolio — the Proceedings, Bulletin, Journal and Transactions of the LMS, the Journal of Topology, Compositio Mathematica, Mathematika, Moduli and Nonlinearity — along with the LMS Lecture Notes and Student Texts book series and the LMS Newsletter. It runs an extensive events programme (Society Meetings, the Hardy and Invited Lecture series, LMS-Sheffield Mathematical Symposia, Research Schools, undergraduate summer schools, the Spitalfields History of Mathematics meetings and public lectures), maintains a research library and historical archive, and is active in mathematics education and science policy through the Council for the Mathematical Sciences. Its grant schemes are funded from the Society's endowments, investments and publishing income and are one of its primary mechanisms for achieving that charitable purpose. Applicants must be mathematicians based in the UK, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands, only one grant per scheme per person per LMS financial year (1 August - 31 July) is allowed, and awards must be claimed within two financial years. The Research Grants Committee funds conference and workshop grants, visiting speakers, joint research groups, Research Reboot/Research in Pairs, collaborations with developing countries, Mathematics in Africa grants, travel to ICMs and ECMs, and Computer Science Small Grants. The Early Career Research Committee funds postgraduate research conference grants, Celebrating New Appointments, early-career travel grants, undergraduate research bursaries, undergraduate summer school and research school grants, LMS Early Career Fellowships and the Cecil King Travel Scholarships. The Education Committee funds single-institution and collaborative teaching & scholarship project grants and scholarship network grants, and the Committee for Women and Diversity in Mathematics funds Caring Supplementary Grants, the Grace Chisholm Young Fellowship, Emmy Noether Fellowships and the Inclusion and Diversity Fund. The Atiyah UK-Lebanon Fellowships and the LMS Student Representatives Activities Fund sit alongside these.
